A small field tally

    Trash-o-meter

A little count of what we carry back out of nature.

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is generally trash free, but mistakes to do happen and sometimes something falls from the hikers pocket. Futhermore, in the history trashless travel was not the standard. So, occasionally I find things that are not supposed to be there. The pieces of litter we find tell curious stories about the places people reach, and the small things that can be left behind.

    Finds from the wild

    What on earth?

Some finds make you pause, some make you smile, and every one belongs somewhere other than the trail.

An individually wrapped toothpick lies diagonally across moss and small twigs on the forest floor.

    The Toothpick

Found on the most remote trail of the national park, deep in the ancient spruce forest... an individually plastic wrapped toothpick. The irony? Someone managed to pack a separate toothpick and carry it deep into the wilderness, even though the forest is full of fallen branches to use naturally without harming nature. Now safely out of the wild.

    The Lost Cap

An extremely worn cap found far out on a trackless fell slope. Oh, the poor hiker whose cap took off in a strong fell wind!

A worn light-colored cap rests among shrubs and branches on a fell slope.
