    The season in motion

Ruska – Where the Fells Turn to Brilliant Reds, Rusts, and Golds

Ruska is Lapland’s most celebrated season, and it is something best experienced firsthand. Walking slowly inside a changing landscape brings you close to the details: the brilliant of the fell flora, the crisp and clean northern air, the rhythmic crunch of the trail beneath your boots, and the profound silence of the open wilderness.

Autumn in the fells invites a natural pause. Away from the noise of everyday life, time slows down. Whether you find your calm in the vast tundra views, the gentle whisper of the wind, or the stillness of an Arctic evening, the wilderness offers a rare sense of presence.

As day turns to evening, the darkening skies bring the first chance to witness northern lights dancing above the vibrant landscape, though nature makes no promises. Along the trail, the season also offers small, grounding rewards: tasting wild Arctic berries straight from the ground.

The autumn trails are waiting. Discover the full itinerary and enquire about joining this quiet wilderness journey.

    Colour changes by place

Birch leaves, fell shrubs and forest floor each turn at their own pace.

    Longer, darker nights

The northern lights may appear when the sky is clear and conditions are right.

    Berries may linger

If ripe berries are available, they can brighten breaks and everyday meals.

    The rhythm of the trail

A day shaped by the group.

The wilderness gives us a framework, not a script. Ville keeps the group moving at a calm pace, watches the conditions and makes space for the small discoveries that make an autumn walk worth carrying.

    01

    Read the day first

Each day begins with a route and weather check. Ville chooses a safe, rewarding line for the group in front of him, rather than forcing a plan that no longer fits the conditions.

    02

    Walk in steady sections

Expect around 15 km each day across marked trails and pathless terrain. The pace includes time for food, water and pauses when a changing patch of colour catches the eye.

    03

    Make room to notice

A berry on the path, a red leaf turning in the light or a quiet pause beside the fell can shape a break. If we find edible plants that we can confidently identify, we can prepare suitable finds together. What is available depends on the day.

    04

Make camp as the light changes

Pitch a tent, cook on a camping stove and take time to notice the evening settling over the forest. The northern lights may appear on darker nights when conditions are right, but sightings are never guaranteed.

    An honest fit

    A real off-the-grid adventure.

The route moves through marked trails and pathless terrain, usually around 15 km a day. Wilderness camping means carrying a typical 16–20 kg pack, including meals and your share of camp equipment. Long days outdoors suit hikers with a good base of fitness who are comfortable carrying a full camp load.

If you enjoy steady walking and have a good base of hiking fitness, tell Ville about your experience and the pack you are used to carrying.

    Safety and trust

Good judgement belongs in the plan.

Remote terrain deserves care before the first step. Ville keeps the experience grounded in preparation, clear communication and decisions that respect the weather and the people walking through it.

Nothing beats good old map and compass navigation in the wilderness. As a backup for special situations, we have GPS navigation and InReach satellite features.

    Routes respond to the group

Daily routes and path choices are adjusted to the group’s capability, preparation and the weather on the ground.

    Weather sets the boundary

The plan leaves room for good judgement. Open fell ascents are not chosen when conditions make them unnecessary or unsafe.

    Prepared for emergencies

Advanced first-aid capability and evacuation planning are part of responsible guiding. In certain cases, evacuation costs are the responsibility of the person being evacuated.

    A respectful group space

Every guest deserves a calm, welcoming wilderness experience. Discrimination and harassment have no place on the trail.
